The act signed by President Truman on July 4, 1950, which allowed Puerto Ricans to draft their own constitution establishing the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
This Act authorized the people of Puerto Rico to write and adopt a constitution for the island in the nature of a compact between the two nations, to draft their own constitution. Public Law 600 was subject to the approval of Puerto Ricans at the ballot box. In a referendum held on June 4, 1951 76.5% of the voters voted in favor of the Act.
